9/17/03 - Rant day, again.
I've been hearing a lot about this Nokia N-Gage thing online lately. It claims to support 3d graphics and play MP3's. How nice. I might consider buying it if their marketing techniques weren't ungodly horrible.
For example. I heard a few months ago about Nokia's spokesman saying something along the lines of "Gameboys are for little kids, since you're a big person, you should play our system." Of course it's not an actual quote, but that's the gist of it. And then there's the whole thing about them taking a shot at Nintendo with "Nintendo markets to 12-year-olds and under. How would you look in a public place if you pulled out a Gameboy?" Well, I don't know, Mr. Nokia. How would I look in a public place if I pulled out what looks like a TV remote and started playing it? (I'd also like to point out that Nokia clarified that previous statement, and that what they MEANT to say was "Nintendo markets to 13-year-olds and under." Whew, I'm glad that's clarified.)
Seriously? Who cares what everyone would say if they saw you playing a Gameboy in public? In fact, why would you care about someone who criticized you based on what you were playing? Beside that, would you pull out a game system, regardless of what it was, during a romantic dinner and start playing? I doubt anyone is going to come over, tap your shoulder and ask "Hey, is that an N-Gage you're playing? Oh good, it is. I almost thought you were immature."
One more thing I have to get out is this horrible sales pitch they have going on their ads that I just saw.
"Are you ready to humiliate your best friend in a public place?"
Wow. Just wow. The only way to humiliate your best friend in a public place by playing one of these things is by playing one yourself. Seriously, if I wanted to humiliate my best friend in a public place I'd bring up some topic like, "Hey, you remember that time I was over at your house and you were trying on your mother's clothes? Yeah, that was great."
